Each answer is written from the official document and quotes the rule it rests on, with the page. Rules change every year, so every answer says which year it is based on.

Domicile and candidature
- What are candidature types A to E in Maharashtra engineering CAP?Maharashtra State Candidature has five types, A to E, and you can claim only one. Type A is for students who passed SSC and HSC (or a diploma) in Maharashtra and are domiciled in or born in Maharashtra; Type B is based on your own or a parent's Maharashtra domicile certificate; Type C on a parent who is a Government of India employee posted in Maharashtra; Type D on a parent who is a Maharashtra Government employee or retired employee; and Type E on the Maharashtra–Karnataka border area with Marathi as mother tongue.Previous-year reference
- What is Home University quota and Other Than Home University quota in Maharashtra CAP?In many colleges, the seats for Maharashtra candidates are split into Home University (HU) seats, for candidates whose Home University is the university area the college falls in, and Other Than Home University (OHU) seats, for Maharashtra candidates from other university areas. For first-year B.E./B.Tech. the split is 70% HU and 30% OHU in non-autonomous government and aided colleges, and 45.5% HU and 19.5% OHU of the intake in non-autonomous unaided private colleges. Autonomous colleges fill their Maharashtra seats at State Level, without an HU/OHU split.Previous-year reference
- How is my home university decided if I passed 12th in one district and live in another? If you are a Type A candidate, your Home University is decided by the place where you passed your qualifying examination — for first-year engineering, your HSC (Standard XII) or diploma — and the university whose districts include that place. The brochure links it to where you passed, not to your home address. For other candidature types a different place counts: where your domicile certificate was issued (Type B), or where your parent is posted or settled (Types C and D).Previous-year reference
CAP process
- How does Maharashtra engineering CAP work step by step?Maharashtra engineering CAP runs in this order: you fill the online CAP application form and upload your documents, get them verified, check the provisional and final merit lists, fill and confirm an option form of colleges and courses before each round, see your provisional allotment, accept the seat (at an Admission Reporting Centre or by online self-scrutiny and paying the seat acceptance fee), and then report to the allotted college. There are four CAP rounds, and there is no further betterment after Round IV.Previous-year reference
- How do I register for Maharashtra engineering CAP and pay the fee?You register by filling the online CAP application form, uploading scanned copies of your original documents, and getting them verified as the State CET Cell prescribes. If you apply on the basis of MHT-CET, you don't pay an application fee. If you apply only on the basis of a national exam such as JEE (Main), the 2026–27 fee, paid online and non-refundable, was ₹1,300 for General category Maharashtra, Outside Maharashtra State (OMS) and some other candidates, ₹1,000 for reserved category, EWS and Persons with Disability candidates from Maharashtra, and USD 50 for NRI, OCI, PIO and foreign national candidates.Previous-year reference
- What do freeze, float and slide mean in CAP seat acceptance? The State CET Cell's brochure uses the word “freeze” but not “float” or “slide”. It describes four situations after an allotment: your seat is frozen automatically if you get a top preference; you can freeze a seat yourself and leave later rounds; you can accept a seat and still take part in later rounds for “betterment”; or you can leave the seat unaccepted and still take part in later rounds.Previous-year reference
- How do I fill the CAP option form and how many options should I give? You fill the option form online through your CAP login before each round, entering institute choice codes in decreasing order of preference, and then confirm it. You can give a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 300 options. The brochure doesn't say how many you should give, but the order matters: the choice in block No. 1 is your first preference, and getting it in Round I freezes the seat automatically.Previous-year reference
- If I get my first preference in CAP round 1, is my seat automatically frozen?Yes. If you are allotted your first preference in CAP Round I, the allotment is auto-frozen: you must accept it and you can't take part in later CAP rounds. You still have to confirm it — by reporting to an Admission Reporting Centre (ARC) or by self-scrutiny of your uploaded documents, and paying the seat acceptance fee online — and then report to the college; if you don't confirm it, you lose the seat.Previous-year reference
- How do I report to the allotted college after CAP and what is the reporting deadline? After you accept your seat (at an Admission Reporting Centre or through self-scrutiny of your uploaded documents), you report to the college finally allotted to you, pay the fee and submit your original documents there to confirm admission. The deadline is the reporting time in the CAP schedule for that round — the brochure doesn't give fixed dates — and if you can't back up your claims with original documents within that time, you lose the seat.Previous-year reference

Reservation and special seats
- How does EWS reservation work in Maharashtra engineering CAP?10% of seats are reserved for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) candidates, and these seats are over and above the course's sanctioned intake. The State CET Cell fills them through CAP. Like the other reservations in the brochure, it applies only to candidates belonging to Maharashtra State; EWS candidates are first considered for EWS seats on merit and, if none is available, for General category seats.Previous-year reference
- How do SEBC and OBC reservations work in Maharashtra engineering admissions?Of the seats available to Maharashtra candidates under CAP, 19% are reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBC) and 10% for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC). These reservations apply only to candidates belonging to Maharashtra State, and you must claim your category when you submit the CAP application form. The brochure says the SEBC reservation policy is subject to the High Court's decision in related writ petitions.Previous-year reference
- What is TFWS and who is eligible for a tuition fee waiver seat? The Tuition Fee Waiver Scheme (TFWS) gives extra (supernumerary) seats, up to 5% of a course's sanctioned intake, on which the tuition fee is waived; you still pay all other fees. Only Maharashtra State Candidature candidates whose parents' annual income from all sources is less than ₹8 lakh are eligible, and the State CET Cell allots these seats on merit from a separate TFWS merit list.Previous-year reference
