How do SEBC and OBC reservations work in Maharashtra engineering admissions?

Previous-year referenceApproved by M.B. Patil Education admissions team, 23 Oct 2026 · source-checked 22 Oct 2026

Short answer

Of the seats available to Maharashtra candidates under CAP, 19% are reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBC) and 10% for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC). These reservations apply only to candidates belonging to Maharashtra State, and you must claim your category when you submit the CAP application form. The brochure says the SEBC reservation policy is subject to the High Court's decision in related writ petitions.

Based on the State CET Cell's Information Brochure for 2026–27 admissions (dated 02.07.2026). The 2027–28 brochure hasn't been published yet — rules can change, so check it when it is.

Who this applies to

Maharashtra State candidates claiming OBC or SEBC in first-year B.E./B.Tech. CAP

The rule, explained

The full reserved share is 60% of the seats for Maharashtra candidates under CAP: SC 13%, ST 7%, VJ/DT (NT-A) 3%, NT-B 2.5%, NT-C 3.5%, NT-D 2%, OBC 19% and SEBC 10%.

How seats are allotted: reserved category candidates are first considered for General category seats on their merit. If a General seat isn't available at their merit, they are considered for seats in their own reserved category.

Documents for OBC and SEBC: a caste certificate, a caste validity certificate and a non-creamy layer certificate (valid up to 31 March 2027, as the 2026–27 brochure requires).
