What is Home University quota and Other Than Home University quota in Maharashtra CAP?

Previous-year referenceApproved by M.B. Patil Education admissions team, 23 Oct 2026 · source-checked 22 Oct 2026

Short answer

In many colleges, the seats for Maharashtra candidates are split into Home University (HU) seats, for candidates whose Home University is the university area the college falls in, and Other Than Home University (OHU) seats, for Maharashtra candidates from other university areas. For first-year B.E./B.Tech. the split is 70% HU and 30% OHU in non-autonomous government and aided colleges, and 45.5% HU and 19.5% OHU of the intake in non-autonomous unaided private colleges. Autonomous colleges fill their Maharashtra seats at State Level, without an HU/OHU split.

Based on the State CET Cell's Information Brochure for 2026–27 admissions (dated 02.07.2026). The 2027–28 brochure hasn't been published yet — rules can change, so check it when it is.

The rule, explained

Maharashtra has ten Home Universities, each covering a set of districts (for example, Savitribai Phule Pune University covers Ahmednagar, Nashik and Pune). Your own Home University depends on your candidature type — for Type A it is where you passed your qualifying examination.

Government and government-aided institutions and university departments (non-autonomous, excluding minority institutions): 70% of Maharashtra seats for HU and 30% for OHU. Autonomous ones: 100% at State Level. Some institutions have their own split: COEP Technological University, Pune has 80% State Level and 20% All India seats; Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University, Lonere has 85% State Level and 15% for candidates from the Konkan districts.

Unaided private colleges (non-minority): of the sanctioned intake, non-autonomous colleges have 45.5% HU and 19.5% OHU seats, autonomous colleges 65% State Level; in both, 15% are All India seats and 20% are Institutional Quota (including 5% for NRI, if applicable).

Every stage of each CAP round is first run with the HU and OHU tags. If seats remain vacant, the same stage is run again without the HU/OHU tag, so leftover seats can go to other eligible candidates on merit.
