How is my home university decided if I passed 12th in one district and live in another?

Previous-year referenceApproved by M.B. Patil Education admissions team, 23 Oct 2026 · source-checked 22 Oct 2026

Short answer

If you are a Type A candidate, your Home University is decided by the place where you passed your qualifying examination — for first-year engineering, your HSC (Standard XII) or diploma — and the university whose districts include that place. The brochure links it to where you passed, not to your home address. For other candidature types a different place counts: where your domicile certificate was issued (Type B), or where your parent is posted or settled (Types C and D).

Based on the State CET Cell's Information Brochure for 2026–27 admissions (dated 02.07.2026) and the MHT-CET 2026 Information Brochure. The 2027–28 brochures haven't been published yet — rules can change, so check them when they are.

Who this applies to

Maharashtra State Candidature candidates in first-year B.E./B.Tech. CAP

The rule, explained

Each Home University covers fixed districts. For example, Savitribai Phule Pune University covers Ahmednagar, Nashik and Pune; Shivaji University covers Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara; Mumbai University covers Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Palghar, Sindhudurg and Thane.

Type A: the place of passing the qualifying examination, within the area of the university, decides your Home University.

Type B: the place of the authority that issued the domicile certificate. Type C: the place where your father or mother is posted. Type D: your parent's place of posting, or place of settlement if retired, or last place of posting if deputed outside Maharashtra. Type E candidates are considered for Other Than Home University or State Level seats.

If your Home University is entered wrongly in the application, the brochure lists change in the Home University among the errors you can correct at document scrutiny at the Admission Reporting Centre (ARC).

Example: A Type A student who passed HSC from a college in Pune district and lives in Kolhapur district has Savitribai Phule Pune University as Home University, because the place of passing — not the place of residence — decides it.
