How is the tie broken in NEET UG when two students get the same marks?

Previous-year referenceApproved by M.B. Patil Education admissions team, 23 Oct 2026 · source-checked 22 Oct 2026

Short answer

If two or more candidates get equal marks, the tie is broken first by higher marks in Biology (Botany and Zoology), then Chemistry, then Physics. If still tied, the candidate with a lower proportion of attempted incorrect answers to correct answers ranks higher, checked first across all subjects and then in Biology, Chemistry and Physics in turn. If the tie still remains, it is settled by a random process guided by an independent expert committee.

Based on the NEET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin. The 2027 bulletin hasn't been published yet — rules can change, so check it when it is.

The rule, explained

The NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin sets this order (from a Public Notice dated 13.06.2023 issued by the NMC's Under Graduate Medical Education Board): (a) higher marks/percentile in Biology (Botany and Zoology); (b) higher marks/percentile in Chemistry; (c) higher marks/percentile in Physics.

Next: (d) lower proportion of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in all subjects; then the same check in (e) Biology, (f) Chemistry and (g) Physics.

(h) If criteria (a) to (g) are used up and the tie still persists, it is resolved through a random process with the guidance of an independent expert committee.
